Addiction to Alcohol
One out of every 14 American adults has an addiction to alcohol. Alcoholism is characterized by: a loss of control over drinking; a preoccupation with obtaining, consuming and feeling the effects of alcohol; continued use despite adverse physical emotional or financial consequences; and perhaps most notably, denial.
An alcoholic may experience all or only a few of these consequences, either constantly or just occasionally.
Signs of an addiction to alcohol
How do you know when you have a problem with alcohol? If you doubt your ability to control your alcohol intake, you may have an alcohol addiction. If you use alcohol to escape your problems or to help you balance your moods or feelings, then you may be addicted.
Do you have a high tolerance level for alcohol? Do you have to drink more and more in order to obtain the comfort levels you want? Do you have blackouts? Do your friends and family seem concerned about your use of alcohol? If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you may have a problem.
Alcohol addiction has no single, definable cause; but, many addicts have a strong genetic predisposition to developing problematic relationships with alcohol or other drugs. Drinkers can also develop an addiction through consistent alcohol use and abuse.
Many alcoholics drink in an effort to regain the happy, relaxed high they experienced with their first few drinks. However, a drinker can quickly go from feeling good to feeling nothing at all.

Is alcoholism treatable? Can an alcoholic overcome his addiction? There is good news. Medical treatment is available and with time, an alcoholic can learn to manage his addiction.
However, it isn’t easy. Research indicates that only about 30% of alcoholics will follow a treatment plan effectively. Of those, the long term success rate is about 70%. Early identification of addiction and early adherence to a treatment program give an alcoholic the best chances for recovery.
