Making Money with an Alcohol Breath Tester

Coin operated alcohol breath testers can be excellent money makers. They are typically installed in bars and other liquor-serving establishments where patrons can test themselves for alcohol impairment by dropping in a few coins—like a vending machine—and simply inserting a straw into the machine and blowing into it.

Enterprising individuals can make money with a coin-operated alcohol breath tester in several ways. The most common method is to place the alcohol testing machines in bars and collect the money weekly or monthly as the machines accumulate cash. They're easier to manage than most "vending machines" because there's no product to buy or stock.

This works well in places that have lots of activity. Joe’s Corner Bar, which has the same ten bar flies night after night probably won’t generate much income.

Some people buy these vending-type machines and rent them to restaurants and bars for a monthly fee. The bar then collects the money for itself and has a vested interest in the success of the machine. This way the bar can also get a tax deduction for the rental.

Some municipalities buy machines like these to help reduce drunk driving. See an example here.

Another way people make money with these breathalyzers is to rent them out to special occasions where alcohol will be served. Some good examples are weddings, large parties, state fairs, stadiums, etc.

One really cool idea involves weddings. The wedding party rents an alcohol testing unit from the machine owner and then charges each drinking guest, say five dollars, and holds their car keys in a safe place. The drinking guest agrees in advance that to get his keys back, he must pass the breathalyzer test. If he doesn’t pass the test, he has to wait it out and take the test again (this might cost him another five dollars), or go home in a cab or with a designated driver.

The guests usually don’t mind because they know that the bride and groom will get the money. And everyone has peace of mind knowing that they didn’t let any drunk drivers loose.

With as many weddings as there are in most cities, the machine owner can get an excellent return on his investment.
