Alcohol Testing using Saliva - a Little Spit Goes a Long Way

A new concept in alcohol testing using saliva has arrived and could be implemented by law enforcement personnel within the next few years.

Saliva alcohol testing is currently being reviewed because it is cheaper than a professional breathalyzer tests and is much more portable. These new tests offer 100% accuracy and results are available within 30 seconds to 4 minutes, depending upon which test method is used.

The basic method is simple: wipe the pre-treated swab along the inside of the mouth and it changes color to indicate the presence of alcohol. The stronger the color is on the swab, the higher the alcohol content of the blood.

Another test kit is the strip pad. The strip is placed on the drinker’s tongue and the resulting color is compared to a chart that shows different levels of alcohol concentration.

There are several companies that sell saliva alcohol tests which can measure blood alcohol content *BAC) as low as .02%, which is equivalent to roughly one drink. Blood alcohol concentration levels are set at .08% to show intoxication, so if the drinking driver’s swab measures higher than that, in most states that person goes to jail.

Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream and can be detected in the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines. This fact alone makes saliva testing a simple solution to alcohol detection. Add portability, no need for personnel training, plus a drastic cost savings over most breathalyzers and you have a winning solution for law enforcement.

Saliva testing for alcohol abuse is also being conducted more frequently during the employment hiring process, after accidents at work and as a control measure for convicted drunk drivers who are on probation.

There is no way to beat these tests; no mint or mouthwash is strong enough to fool the swab or strip. The only way to pass the test is not to drink at all.
