A Look at Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Struggling with a debilitating disease, an addition to alcohol, drugs or both, some ask for help, other need help but do not ask, others require serious intervention, others near death or dying, either do nothing and perish or reach out or are rescued from the brink and brought back slowly and gradually.

This is the cue for the rehabilitation expert, approach or initiative, treatment center, professional, program, channel, person or resource through which dedicated, committed, medical and holistic detoxification, supports and tries to start the alcohol and drug rehab process.

The road to recovery for alcohol and drug rehabilitation is a long one. The alcoholic, drug addict or substance abuser may face problems with both alcohol and drugs that will last the duration of their adult lives.

Traditional alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs focused on a 12 step program and with research and modern science a lot more is known about the dynamics at play in alcohol and alcohol and drug rehabilitation.

For example:

  • Traditional step-program in group environment: Many programs work with group counseling, in which members share painful experiences and help each other to come to terms with the past. Some programs assign sponsors, so that members of the group can help each other past temptations and talk through problems. Group therapy can be very useful for many people, but for some, the idea of sharing difficult memories can be humiliating.

  • There is also one-on-one therapy and more holistic approaches that drills down and through to the deepest problems in an addict's life. Reliving some of the most hurtful experiences and emotional pain, such as through hypnotherapy, is problematic and challenging, although repressing it can have worse consequences that potentially lead back to addiction.

There are no quick-fix answers to addiction and recovery and it is indeed an extremely challenging task that takes devotion and time. The needs of every individual are different, and the process of finding a rehabilitation process that works, fits and suits you and your unique circumstances should receive highest priority.
